Rochester Falls

Taxis from Souillac make the bone jerking return journey through sugar cane fields to Rochester Falls. The more adventurous can drive or walk the 5km (3miles) by following the signs for Rochester Falls. along the Lady Barclay Branch Road to the left of the large Roman Catholic Church in the main road. Signs marked 'Rochester Hall' in conflicting directions confuse the most determined explorer who should simply keep to the right, past La Terracine sugar factory and a colourful Indian temple. The rough track, weaves uphill between the cane fields before descending to the falls. They tumble from the Savanne River from a height of about 10m (33ft) where constant erosion has fashioned the basalt rock into upright columns. Young Indian boys squat at the top waiting for tourists to arrive and perform dare-devil dives into the water below.
