Domaine Les Pailles, on the southern outskirts of the city, is a 3,000 acre nature park which includes the wild terrain of the mountain which forms the backdrop. This can be explored in a land rover. The park, a tranquil scene, is itself a slice of Mauritian history with a replica of a sugar mill circa 1750 with a bullock turning the wheel, the original type rum distillery and an old style coffee grinding hut.
A horse drawn carriage or, alternatively, a miniature railway will take you on a tour which includes a spice garden. Its four restaurants - the La Dolce Vita (Italian) Indra (Indian) Cannelle Rouge (Creole) and Fu Xiao (Chinese) are all excellent. There is a swimming pool and putting green.
